Day 2: Þingvellir – Kaldidalur – Hraunfossar – Reykholt

On day 2 of your vacation in Iceland, you’ll begin by heading out from Reykjavík and driving through some of the country’s most fascinating historical and natural landscapes. Your first stop is Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important places in Iceland’s history. Here, you can walk between two tectonic plates—Europe and North America—at the Almannagjá Gorge. It’s a geological marvel and a historical one, as Þingvellir was the site of Iceland’s first parliament, established in 930 AD.

From Þingvellir, you’ll venture into the Kaldidalur Valley, one of Iceland’s more remote and rugged roads, often only accessible during summer. This scenic route takes you through the stunning Þórsmörk region, where you’ll drive past glaciers, mountains, and untouched wilderness. The remote beauty of this area offers a feeling of tranquility and isolation that is truly unique to Iceland.

After your drive through Kaldidalur, you’ll head towards Hraunfossar, a beautiful and somewhat hidden waterfall. This cascade of water flows under a vast lava field, creating an almost magical scene as it pours into the Hvítá River. Just a short walk away, you’ll also find Barnafoss, another stunning waterfall with an intriguing local legend attached to it.

Your final stop of the day is Reykholt, a small but historically significant village. Reykholt was the home of Snorri Sturluson, a medieval Icelandic historian, poet, and politician, and is often referred to as the “home of the sagas.” You can visit Snorri’s Pool, an ancient hot spring bath where Snorri is said to have relaxed, and learn about Iceland’s rich literary and historical heritage.

On day 3, your adventure takes you to the breathtaking Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in miniature” due to its diverse landscapes, ranging from volcanic craters and glaciers to rugged coastlines and charming fishing villages. But before you reach the peninsula, you’ll drive through the scenic Borgarfjörður region, known for its beautiful fjords, waterfalls, and rich history.

As you approach the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the landscape begins to change, and you’ll soon see the imposing Snæfellsjökull Glacier rise majestically in the distance. This glacier, topped by a dormant volcano, is one of Iceland’s most famous landmarks, made even more iconic by its role in Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. The surrounding Snæfellsjökull National Park offers some of the most stunning scenery in Iceland, with rugged coastlines, lava fields, and dramatic cliffs.

You’ll also have the chance to visit Arnarstapi, a quaint fishing village with beautiful coastal views and striking basalt rock formations. Here, walk along the cliffs to admire the dramatic landscapes and maybe even spot some puffins or other seabirds nesting along the coastline.
