Tour type: Self-Drive
This 10-day self-drive Ring Road tour is shaped by how we like to travel around Iceland. The route follows the full circle of the country, with sensible driving distances and enough time to stop, walk, and take in the surroundings without feeling rushed.
You will travel through the South Coast to see classics such as Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, continue east to the glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón, and follow the quieter roads of the Eastfjords. In the north, the landscapes change again around Lake Mývatn, before reaching the relaxed town atmosphere of Akureyri. Each region offers its own character, shaped by weather, light, and long distances.
Accommodation is selected to keep daily driving comfortable and allow time in the evenings to enjoy a good meal or a peaceful walk nearby. The journey is as much about the space between sights as about the highlights themselves: open roads, changing skies, and moments of quiet that define travel in Iceland.
The total solar eclipse of 2026 is an integral part of the journey, experienced from a carefully chosen location along the route where wide horizons and open landscapes give the best possible setting. It is a natural pause in the journey, a shared moment with the land itself, and a memory that stays long after the drive around Iceland is complete.
Accommodation and car options
You can choose from a selection of reliable and well-maintained vehicles suited to Iceland’s Ring Road. Options include a Toyota Yaris (manual, 2WD) for efficient, easy driving, a Volkswagen Golf (automatic, 2WD) for added comfort, or a Kia Sportage (automatic, 4WD) for extra space and stability.
All accommodation is included and confirmed for the entire journey. You will stay in carefully selected hotels along the route, in comfortable standard rooms with breakfast included each morning, exactly as outlined in the itinerary. The hotels are chosen for their convenient locations, peaceful settings, and consistent quality, ensuring a relaxed and worry-free stay each night.
Day 1: Arrival, Keflavík Airport - Reykjavik
Your journey begins on arrival at Keflavík International Airport, where you will pick up your rental car and set off toward Reykjavík. The drive to the city is straightforward and scenic, offering a gentle introduction to Iceland’s open landscapes and volcanic terrain.
Reykjavík is the world’s northernmost capital, small in size yet rich in character. Home to around 123,000 residents, the city combines a relaxed pace with a lively cultural scene. From striking modern architecture and local design shops to museums, galleries, cafés, and waterfront walks, Reykjavík is easy to explore and full of quiet charm.
Later in the day, unwind at the iconic Sky Lagoon with the premium SER Pass. This experience includes the Seven-Step Ritual and private changing facilities, offering a peaceful way to recover after your flight. Entrance times are flexible and will be confirmed in advance.
You will spend the night in Reykjavík at Center Hotels Arnarhvoll, a centrally located four-star hotel known for its calm atmosphere. The hotel offers a quiet setting close to the harbor and city center, a wellness area on site, and a comfortable standard room with breakfast included. This is an ideal place to rest before beginning your Ring Road adventure.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
Day 2: Reykjavík - The Golden Circle – Selfoss
After breakfast in Reykjavík, you set out for one of Iceland’s most celebrated routes, the Golden Circle. This scenic drive introduces you to some of South Iceland’s most remarkable natural landmarks, each with its own story and character.
Your first major stop is Þingvellir National Park, a place of great natural and historical importance. Here, you can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates while exploring the site where Iceland’s first parliament, Alþingi, was founded over a thousand years ago. The vast open landscape, lava fields, and rock formations create a powerful sense of place that many visitors find deeply moving.
Continuing east, you arrive at the lively geothermal area of Geysir Hot Spring Area. This active valley is filled with steaming vents and bubbling mud pools, but the highlight is Strokkur, which reliably erupts every few minutes, sending hot water high into the air. The nearby Geysir Center offers clear and engaging exhibits that explain the geothermal forces shaping this region.
A short drive brings you to Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. Fed by the Hvítá River, Gullfoss tumbles in two dramatic stages into a deep canyon carved by glacial floods at the end of the Ice Age. The viewing paths allow you to experience the power of the water while taking in sweeping views of the surrounding highlands.
From the Golden Circle, the journey continues south toward the Selfoss area, passing fertile farmland and rivers that reflect Iceland’s strong connection between nature and daily life.
Along the route, several optional experiences are available for those wishing to add a little extra to the day, including a visit to Laugarvatn Fontana, a relaxing soak at the Secret Lagoon, a guided snorkelling tour in the clear waters of Silfra, or a snowmobile excursion on a nearby glacier.
A stop at Friðheimar is also possible, where dining among geothermal greenhouses offers a uniquely Icelandic experience. Table reservations are required in advance.
You spend the night in the Selfoss area at Hotel Örk, a comfortable three-star hotel offering standard rooms and breakfast included. This is a pleasant place to relax after a full day of sightseeing, surrounded by the calm countryside of South Iceland.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
Day 3: Selfoss – Skógarfoss – Seljalandsfoss – Vík - Skafafell
Leaving the Selfoss area, you will continue east along Iceland’s South Coast, where waterfalls, glaciers, and black sand beaches define the landscape. This stretch of the Ring Road is rich in natural beauty and offers some of the most memorable scenery of the journey.
One of the first highlights of the day is Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s largest and most impressive waterfalls. With its broad curtain of water dropping 60 meters from ancient cliffs, Skógafoss is powerful and atmospheric. On sunny days, the mist often creates single or even double rainbows, a sight locals never tire of seeing.
A short drive away is Seljalandsfoss, a very different but equally iconic waterfall. Fed by meltwater from Eyjafjallajökull, Seljalandsfoss falls gracefully from former sea cliffs into a shallow pool below. Weather permitting, you can walk behind the cascade and experience the waterfall from a unique perspective.
At 14:00, you take part in a 3-hour guided glacier hike on Sólheimajökull. This small-group experience is designed as an accessible introduction to glacier walking, led by a certified English-speaking glacier guide. All necessary safety equipment is provided on site, including a helmet, a harness, crampons, and an ice axe. The walk begins near a glacial lagoon, where floating icebergs often rest quietly against the dark volcanic ash. On the glacier itself, you will see crevasses, ice formations, and sweeping views that give a real sense of Iceland’s ever-changing nature.
Please note: all information about the meeting point will be provided with the voucher. We highly recommend that you arrive at the meeting point 20 minutes before the departure time stated on your ticket.
Continuing east, you will reach the dramatic coastline near Vík. A stop at Reynisfjara reveals towering basalt columns, volcanic sand, and powerful Atlantic waves. The cliffs nearby are home to seabirds, including puffins, during the summer months. The nearby village of Vík, with around 300 residents, offers a welcoming break and views over the black beaches and sea stacks offshore.
The day ends in the Skaftafell area, where the landscape opens into wide plains shaped by glaciers and rivers. You spend the night at Hotel Skaftafell, a comfortable three-star hotel offering standard rooms and breakfast included.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
Day 4: Skaftafell – Jökulsárlón – Breiðdalsvík
From the Skaftafell area, the journey continues east across vast glacial outwash plains, braided rivers, and moss-covered lava fields that stretch toward the horizon.
In Skaftafell, a green oasis set between glaciers and black sands, you have the opportunity to take a gentle walk to Svartifoss. This distinctive waterfall is framed by dark basalt columns, formed by ancient lava flows, and is one of the most loved walking routes in the area. Skaftafell is also one of the best places to view Hvannadalshnjúkur, Iceland’s highest peak, rising from the ice-covered expanse of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier.
Driving further along the Ring Road, the scenery is dominated by sweeping views of Vatnajökull and its outlet glaciers, culminating in the remarkable Jökulsárlón.
13:00 or 14:00 – Zodiac Boat Tour on the ice lagoon, duration: 2 hrs (1 hr on the lagoon).
You will take part in a Zodiac boat tour on the glacier lagoon. Gliding quietly among floating icebergs, you travel close to the glacier wall where the ice meets the water. The experience offers moments of deep stillness, and at times, the dramatic sight of ice breaking away from the glacier and drifting slowly across the lagoon. The icebergs display striking colors, from bright white to deep blue, streaked with volcanic ash from centuries-old eruptions.
Just nearby, a short stop at the famous Diamond Beach reveals ice fragments scattered across black volcanic sand, sparkling in the light like cut glass as they slowly melt before reaching the sea.
The drive continues east toward Höfn and along the quieter roads of the Eastfjords, where mountains meet the sea and small fishing villages reflect a slower rhythm of life.
You spend the night in the village of Breiðdalsvík, staying at a comfortable three-star Hotel Breiðdalsvík. Standard accommodation and breakfast are included, offering a peaceful end to a day filled with some of Iceland’s most striking glacier landscapes.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
Day 5: Breiðdalsvík - Eastfjords - Egilsstaðir
Today’s drive takes you deeper into the quiet beauty of Iceland’s Eastfjords, a region shaped by ancient volcanic layers and mighty glaciers during the last Ice Age. The fjords here were carved into older lava flows, later reshaped by eruptions beneath thick ice caps, creating a landscape of dramatic coastlines, steep mountains, and broad valleys that feel untouched and peaceful.
The Eastfjords are known for their slower rhythm and strong local character. Along the way, you pass small fishing villages, hidden waterfalls, lava formations, and long stretches of road where reindeer are sometimes seen grazing on the hillsides. This is also one of Iceland’s richest areas for wildlife, history, and local museums, offering a more profound sense of everyday life beyond the main tourist routes.
One of the day’s highlights is a walk to Hengifoss, the third-highest waterfall in Iceland. Hengifoss is especially striking for the red clay layers and black basalt bands in the cliff behind it, formed by ancient volcanic eruptions. The walk from the parking area takes around 40 to 60 minutes and follows a well-marked trail through a scenic canyon. Along the way, you pass Litlanesfoss, where beautifully formed basalt columns line the gorge. The path is moderately steep in places, and care is needed near the canyon edges, but the views make the walk well worth the effort.
In the afternoon, you arrive in the Egilsstaðir area, the main service town of East Iceland and a natural hub for the surrounding fjords and valleys. For those wishing to unwind, a visit to the nearby Vök Baths is an optional but rewarding experience. Floating geothermal pools on a lake offer a calm, restorative end to the day.
You spend the night near Egilsstaðir at Hótel 1001 Nótt, a four-star hotel known for its peaceful setting and comfort. A standard room and breakfast are included, providing a restful base before continuing your journey around Iceland’s Ring Road.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
Day 6: Egilsstaðir - Mývatn – Goðafoss - Akureyri
Leaving Egilsstaðir, this day brings a change in scenery, from deep canyons and volcanic terrain to waterfalls and fjords.
One of the first stops is the striking Stuðlagil Canyon. Towering basalt columns rise above a clear turquoise glacial river, creating one of Iceland’s most impressive natural formations. A return walk of around 5 km begins from the main parking area and is graded easy, making it an enjoyable and scenic outing with plenty of time to stop and take in the views.
Continuing west, you arrive in the geothermally active Lake Mývatn area, one of the most diverse landscapes in the country. Highlights include the eerie lava formations of Dimmuborgir, the bubbling mud pools and steaming vents at Hverir, the quiet shores of Lake Mývatn itself, the small lava cave at Grjótagjá, and the unusual pseudocraters scattered around the lake. This area clearly shows how volcanic forces continue to shape Iceland’s landscape.
A short drive brings you to Goðafoss, known as the Waterfall of the Gods. Glacial-blue water flows in a vast, graceful arc over dark lava, creating swirling patterns below. The waterfall is both powerful and serene, and its setting makes it one of the most photographed sights in the north.
18:00 / 19:00 / 20:00 / 21:00 – choice of entrance times for the Forest Lagoon.
In the early evening, you arrive in Akureyri, where you can relax at the beautifully located Forest Lagoon. Set above the fjord with mountain views, the lagoon offers a peaceful soak in warm geothermal water. Entrance times are flexible, and towel rental is included. On clear evenings, you may enjoy the soft light of the midnight sun while unwinding in the pools.
Akureyri is often called the capital of the north and is known for its welcoming atmosphere and compact, walkable center. The town offers cozy cafés, good restaurants, local shops, art galleries, and beautifully preserved wooden houses.
You spend the night in Akureyri at Hotel Akureyri, a comfortable three-star hotel in a convenient location. A standard room and breakfast are included.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
Day 7: Akureyri – Grábrók - Reykholt
The day begins in Akureyri with a memorable morning on the water. At 10:00, you join the Akureyri Express whale and bird watching tour in Eyjafjörður.
Departing from the town’s floating pier, this small-group experience is limited to just 12 passengers, creating a calm, personal atmosphere. Aboard a specially designed RIB boat, you travel across the fjord searching for wildlife, with excellent chances of spotting humpback whales, dolphins, and seabirds. The boats are fast and stable, allowing you to reach feeding areas quickly while respecting the animals in their natural environment.
After returning to shore, you begin a scenic drive south along Iceland’s Ring Road, passing through open farmland, river valleys, and long stretches of quiet countryside. This route offers a peaceful contrast to the dramatic coastlines of the north.
A highlight along the way is a stop at Grábrók, an easily accessible volcanic crater in the Borgarfjörður region. A well-marked path leads from the parking area to the rim of the crater, with the round trip taking around 40 minutes. From the top, you are rewarded with expansive views over the Borgarfjörður landscape and the surrounding mountains, a fine place to pause and take in the scale of the land.
The journey continues to the Reykholt area, a region rich in history and natural beauty, known for its fertile fields and geothermal activity. You spend the night at Hotel Varmaland, a comfortable three-star hotel offering standard rooms and breakfast included.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
Day 8: Eclipse Day! Snæfellsnes Peninsula - Reykjavík
Today is one of the most memorable days of the journey, combining the rich landscapes of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula with the rare experience of the 2026 total solar eclipse. Driving west, you enter the varied landscapes of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, where sights appear one after another along a compact and scenic route.
A short walk at Eldborg leads to the rim of a perfectly formed volcanic crater rising from an open lava field. As you continue, the views open toward mountains and small waterfalls spilling from the hillsides, especially striking as you approach the western coast.
The peninsula is crowned by Snæfellsjökull, a glacier-covered volcano made famous by Jules Verne’s novel “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”. Locals have long considered this mountain a place of strong natural presence, and on clear days it dominates the skyline.
Along the coast, you explore the charming hamlets of Arnarstapi and Hellnar, known for their basalt cliffs, sea arches, and birdlife. Nearby, the rugged sea stacks of Lóndrangar rise sharply from the ocean. A stop at Djúpalónssandur reveals a dramatic black pebble beach, once an important fishing harbor, where the remains of an old English trawler still rest as a reminder of the area’s maritime history. You also pass through traditional fishing villages such as Hellissandur, Ríf, Ólafsvík, and Grundarfjörður, each offering a glimpse into coastal life in Iceland.
Total solar eclipse – August 12, 2026
In the late afternoon, the journey slows as you prepare for the tour’s highlight: the total solar eclipse. Iceland is one of the best places in the world to witness this rare event, with long horizons and open landscapes creating ideal viewing conditions.
Suggested viewing locations include Búðir, Arnarstapi, and Ólafsvík, all offering excellent coastal settings with clear views of the sky. From these locations, the duration of totality is approximately two minutes.
Key eclipse timings in Icelandic local time:
- Start of partial eclipse: 16:45
- Start of total eclipse: 17:46
- Maximum eclipse: 17:47
- End of total eclipse: 17:49
- End of partial eclipse: 18:46
For a brief moment, daylight fades into twilight as the moon fully covers the sun, creating an unforgettable stillness across the land. It is a shared experience that feels both deeply personal and profoundly connected to nature.
After the eclipse, you return to Reykjavík for a relaxed evening and overnight stay at Miðgarður by Center Hotels. This four-star hotel is centrally located in a quiet part of the city and offers on-site spa facilities. A standard room and breakfast are included, and you will stay here for two nights, providing a comfortable and calm base at the end of your Ring Road journey.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
Day 9: Reykjavík at leisure
Today is yours to enjoy Reykjavík at your own pace, with a range of optional experiences that allow you to explore the city’s culture, food, and natural wonders in a relaxed and enjoyable way.
For a deeper look into Iceland’s geology and storytelling traditions, the Lava Show offers a unique indoor experience where real molten lava is recreated safely, accompanied by engaging explanations from local hosts. Another popular option is FlyOver Iceland, a scenic virtual flight that gives a bird’s-eye view of Iceland’s landscapes, ideal for seeing remote areas you may not reach by road.
At Perlan, you can explore interactive exhibitions on glaciers, volcanoes, and northern nature, followed by panoramic views over the city from the observation deck. For those wishing to unwind, a visit to the iconic Blue Lagoon offers a soothing soak in mineral-rich waters, a fitting way to reflect on your journey around the country.
Food lovers may choose to join the Reykjavík Food Walk, running between 12:00 and 17:00 with several departure times available. This small-group walking tour meets at Harpa Concert Hall and lasts approximately 3.5 hours. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, the tour introduces you to Reykjavík through its flavors and stories.
Along the way, you will taste grass-fed Icelandic lamb, fresh local fish, and homemade Icelandic ice cream based on a long-held family recipe. A stop at the famous Icelandic hot dog stand is also included. Between tastings, you explore well-known landmarks, hear personal stories about life in Reykjavík, and gain insight into local traditions and everyday culture.
These optional experiences let you shape the day around your interests, whether that means learning, relaxing, or simply enjoying good food and conversation in Iceland’s welcoming capital.
You will spend the night at the same hotel.
