Car pick-up: Akureyri airport

Tour duration: 4 days

Age limit: No limit

Availability: Winter (Oct. – mid. April)

Tour type: Self-Drive

One of the most significant benefits of this North Iceland winter self-drive tour is the freedom it offers. With your rental car, you can comfortably discover Akureyri, Iceland’s vibrant second city, and its spectacular surroundings—including the snow-capped peaks and peaceful waters of Eyjafjörður fjord.

Just a short drive from Akureyri, you’ll come to the legendary Goðafoss waterfall—a stunning sight in winter when the cascading waters freeze into dramatic ice formations. From there, continue to the geothermal wonderland of Lake Mývatn, a region famous for its volcanic landscapes, hot springs, lava fields, and abundant birdlife.

You will spend some time relaxing at the Mývatn Nature Baths, a lesser-known but equally enchanting alternative to the Blue Lagoon, where you soak in warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by snowy lava fields.

Another highlight of this itinerary is the scenic coastal town of Húsavík, often called the whale-watching capital of Iceland. In winter, Skjálfandi Bay comes alive with a rich array of marine life. Join a guided boat tour, and you might spot humpback whales, orcas, and even the majestic blue whale—a truly unforgettable Arctic experience.

With your own vehicle, you’re not limited to a fixed route. Stop whenever the light is just right for a photo, follow a side road to a remote hot spring, or simply pull over to take in the beauty of Iceland’s untouched northern landscapes. From snow-covered mountains to frozen waterfalls and quiet fjords, the journey is yours to shape.

Please note: Domestic flights between Reykjavík and Akureyri are not included in the package price and should be booked separately.

Day 1: Arrival in Akureyri, pick up the rental car from Akureyri airport

Your 4-day winter self-drive tour begins with your arrival in Akureyri, a lively yet peaceful town set at the base of the stunning Eyjafjörður fjord. Often called the capital of the north, Akureyri is the perfect starting point for exploring Iceland’s lesser-traveled but deeply rewarding northern region.

While domestic flights from Reykjavík to Akureyri are not included in the tour package, this quick and scenic journey can be easily booked separately—and offers a beautiful aerial introduction to the landscapes you’ll soon experience up close.

Upon landing at Akureyri Airport, your 4×4 rental car will be ready for pickup right at the terminal, ensuring a smooth and convenient transition to your Icelandic road trip. With your own vehicle, you’ll enjoy the freedom to explore at your own pace without the pressure of group tours or fixed schedules.

Spend your first day settling in and discovering the local surroundings. You may wish to explore Akureyri’s charming town center, where you’ll find cozy cafés, local art shops, and striking architecture—including the landmark Akureyri Church overlooking the fjord. Alternatively, take a short, scenic drive along Eyjafjörður, where snow-capped peaks and tranquil waters create one of the most picturesque settings in the country.

Whether you choose to begin your adventure with sightseeing, photography, or simply unwinding in the quiet beauty of North Iceland, day 1 sets the perfect tone for the unforgettable journey ahead.

Day 2: Lake Mývatn and Goðafoss waterfall, Myvatn Nature Bath (admission included)

On day 2, your journey into the heart of North Iceland’s winter magic truly begins. Today’s route takes you from Akureyri to the otherworldly landscapes of the Lake Mývatn area—a region known for its steaming geothermal fields, surreal volcanic formations, and serene winter beauty.

Begin your day with a visit to the awe-inspiring Goðafoss, one of Iceland’s most photographed waterfalls. Nicknamed the “Waterfall of the Gods,” this 12-meter cascade is even more enchanting in winter when ice clings to its basalt cliffs and snow blankets the surrounding canyon. The frozen mist creates an ethereal atmosphere—ideal for both quiet reflection and dramatic photos.

From there, continue east to Lake Mývatn, a volcanic marvel shaped by centuries of eruptions and geothermal activity. Along the way, the landscape becomes more surreal, with lava fields, pseudocraters, and snow-covered plains creating a sense of traveling across another planet.

Once in the area, explore some of Mývatn’s most fascinating natural attractions. Start with the Hverir geothermal field, where boiling mud pots, steam vents, and sulfur-scented fumaroles rise from the ground in a mesmerizing dance of heat and ice. Then head to Dimmuborgir, which is a labyrinth of lava formations and caves that feel straight out of Norse mythology.

After a day of exploration, treat yourself to the soothing warmth of the Mývatn Nature Baths- the entrance is included in the tour. Surrounded by lava fields and snow-covered mountains, this open-air geothermal spa is the perfect place to relax and recharge. The mineral-rich water, naturally heated and infused with silica, is known for its calming and skin-soothing properties. As you soak, take in panoramic views of the volcanic landscape—and if you’re lucky and conditions are right, you might even catch the Northern Lights dancing overhead.

Optional tours:

  • Horse riding
  • Snowmobiles near Myvatn
  • Dog sledding near Myvatn

Day 3: Optional tours, for example snowmobiles, whale watching etc.

On your third day in North Iceland, you’ll have the freedom to shape your own experience. Whether you’re looking for action, nature, or something in between, this region offers endless possibilities—especially in winter, when the landscape takes on a quiet, snow-covered beauty.

If you’re in the mood for adventure, a snowmobile tour is a great way to get out into the wild. Guided rides across open snowfields or glacier areas give you a new perspective on the mountains and valleys of the north. Locals often say there’s nothing quite like hearing the crunch of snow under your skis with a broad horizon all around you.

For wildlife lovers, a visit to Húsavík is worth the drive. Known across Iceland as the best place for whale watching, this small coastal town offers winter boat tours where you may spot humpbacks, orcas, and other whales in the chilly waters of Skjálfandi Bay. The guides are experienced and passionate, often sharing stories about the bay and its marine life that you won’t find in guidebooks.

Another great way to explore the area is by a Super Jeep, especially if you want to reach more remote locations that regular cars can’t access. These custom tours take you deep into the highlands or along rough tracks where you’ll see Iceland’s more rugged side—frozen lava fields, hidden geothermal spots, and sweeping mountain views.

If you’d rather take it easy, there are plenty of quieter ways to spend the day. Go for a walk through Lake Mývatn’s volcanic surroundings, visit a local hot spring, or simply enjoy the view with a warm drink in hand. In winter, the light changes quickly, and every hour brings a new look to the landscape.

Day 4: Drop off car at Akureyri Airport, flight to Reykjavik

Your final day in North Iceland begins with a quiet drive back to Akureyri Airport, where you’ll return your rental car and wrap up your self-drive adventure. After days of exploring frozen waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, and remote fjords, this last leg of the journey offers a moment to take in the beauty one more time.

The road to the airport winds along the shores of Eyjafjörður, Iceland’s longest fjord. On clear days, you’ll catch views of the surrounding mountains, often capped in fresh snow. It’s the kind of peaceful scenery that stays with you long after the trip ends.

Once at the airport, you’ll return your vehicle—conveniently at the terminal—and prepare for your short flight back to Reykjavík. This scenic hop over the highlands is the perfect way to end the trip. You will see a bird’s-eye view of the glaciers, volcanic peaks, and stunning winter plains.

Back in Reykjavík, your journey through North Iceland comes to a close. We believe that whether you’re continuing your stay in the capital or connecting to an international flight, you’ll be left with lasting memories of Iceland’s raw winter beauty and the freedom of having explored it on your terms.
