Day 1: Arrival at Keflavík Airport and Reykjavík
Upon arrival at Keflavík International Airport, collect your rental car and begin the drive to Reykjavík. The journey takes you through open lava fields and coastal landscapes before reaching the capital.
Reykjavík’s city center is compact and easy to explore on foot, making it ideal for a relaxed introduction to Iceland. Laugavegur and Skólavörðustígur form the heart of the shopping and café scene, with Skólavörðustígur known for its creative atmosphere, colorful street art, and independent boutiques. The street leads directly to Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavík’s most recognizable landmark. Inspired by Iceland’s basalt columns, the church towers over the city and offers panoramic views from the top for those who take the elevator up.
A short walk away is Harpa Concert Hall, a striking glass building by the old harbor. Its modern design reflects Iceland’s light and landscape, and it has become one of the city’s cultural symbols, hosting concerts, exhibitions, and events year-round.
Overnight in Reykjavík. 1 night accommodation at Fosshotel Lind or similar. Standard double room with private facilities and breakfast included.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
Day 2: Reykjavík to Hella via the Golden Circle
Today you travel from Reykjavík to South Iceland, following the famous Golden Circle route. This classic sightseeing loop is popular for good reason, as it brings together some of the country’s most remarkable natural and historical landmarks in a relatively short distance.
Your first major stop is Þingvellir National Park, a place of profound significance to Icelanders. It has been a national park since 1928 and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. When the first Viking settlers arrived in the 10th century, they chose this natural amphitheater as the site of Alþingi, the world’s oldest parliament. At Law Rock, laws were recited aloud, carried by memory across the open landscape shaped by dramatic rock walls and rift valleys.
Continue to the Geysir geothermal area, where the ground is alive with steaming vents, bubbling mud pools, and erupting hot springs. The most active geyser, Strokkur, erupts every few minutes, sending hot water high into the air. The nearby Geysir Center offers informative exhibits and facilities open year-round.
Next is Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls. Here, the Hvítá river plunges in two stages into a deep glacial canyon, creating a powerful and unforgettable sight. Many consider Gullfoss to be among the most beautiful waterfalls in the country, and its scale and energy leave a lasting impression.
After completing the Golden Circle, continue south through fertile farmland toward Hella, located along the banks of the Ytri-Rangá river.
Overnight near Hella. 1 night accommodation in Hella or similar. Standard double room with private facilities and breakfast included.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
Day 3: Hella to Reykholt via Borgarfjörður
Today you drive west toward Borgarfjörður, a region known for valleys, lava fields, and some of West Iceland’s most distinctive waterfalls.
Your main stops are Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, two waterfalls located side by side yet strikingly different in character. Hraunfossar, meaning Lava Falls, is a series of countless small streams flowing gently out from beneath a wide lava field and into the Hvítá river. Stretching for nearly 900 meters, the waterfalls create a delicate curtain of water over dark volcanic rock. The color of the water shifts with the light and season, from clear turquoise to soft, milky white, making it a favorite spot for photography.
Just upstream is Barnafoss, or Children’s Falls, a dramatic set of powerful rapids surging through a narrow rocky canyon. According to local legend, the waterfall is named after two children who were lost here long ago. The rushing, pale-blue water and twisted rock formations give Barnafoss a raw, energetic feel, contrasting sharply with the calm elegance of Hraunfossar.
After exploring the waterfalls, continue to the historic village of Reykholt, long known for its geothermal activity and cultural significance.
Overnight in the Reykholt area. 1 night accommodation in Reykholt or similar. Standard double room with private facilities and breakfast included.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
Day 4: Reykholt to Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Today, you head west to explore the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often described as Iceland in miniature due to the incredible variety of landscapes found within a relatively small area. Following the southern side of the peninsula, the scenery shifts constantly between lava fields, beaches, cliffs, and volcanic formations.
As you approach the peninsula, the solitary Eldborg crater rises from the flat land on one side of the road, while volcanic mountains and craters stretch across the other. One of the first highlights is the impressive Gerðuberg basalt wall, where perfectly formed hexagonal columns create a striking natural façade. Nearby, you pass Ölkelda, where you can safely taste the water directly from the source.
Continuing along the coast, stop at Búðir, where a small black wooden church stands isolated in the Búðahraun lava field. A short walk leads to the nearby shoreline, where reddish sand contrasts sharply with dark lava formations and the open Atlantic.
Further west is Arnarstapi, a coastal village known for its dramatic cliffs and rich birdlife. A walk from the harbor along the cliff tops reveals columnar basalt formations and nesting seabirds, with sweeping views over the ocean. On clear days, the Snæfellsjökull glacier dominates the horizon. Both Arnarstapi and the nearby village of Hellnar offer cafés and places to stop for lunch or refreshments.
As you continue, the rugged Lóndrangar basalt cliffs rise from the shoreline, followed by Dritvík and Djúpalónssandur, a striking black pebble beach once used by fishermen heading out to sea. The area still bears traces of this harsh maritime past.
For those interested in Iceland’s underground world, there is an option to visit Vatnshellir lava cave. The lava tube extends for more than 200 meters and descends around 35 meters below the surface, revealing colorful rock layers formed by ancient volcanic eruptions.
In Hellissandur, you can visit the maritime museum and enjoy one of the best viewpoints of Snæfellsjökull glacier. According to legend, and famously described in Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, this glacier-covered volcano marks the entrance to the center of the Earth.
The drive continues through small fishing villages such as Ólafsvík and Grundarfjörður, where Mount Kirkjufell and the nearby Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall offer one of the most photographed views in West Iceland. Along the way, you may notice small waterfalls cascading down hillsides, sometimes drifting sideways in the wind.
Overnight on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. 1 night accommodation at Fosshotel Hellnar or similar. Standard double room with private facilities and breakfast included.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
Day 5: Snæfellsnes Peninsula to Reykjavík
Today, you return to Reykjavík at a relaxed pace, with the freedom to enjoy the journey and make stops as you wish along the way. After several days of exploring Iceland’s diverse landscapes, the drive back to the capital offers a gentle transition from countryside to city.
The remainder of the day is at your leisure. You may choose to explore more of Reykjavík’s cafés, museums, and waterfront walks, or simply unwind after your road trip.
For those wishing to end the journey with a classic Icelandic experience, an optional visit to the Blue Lagoon can be arranged with a pre-booked entry time. The Comfort Package includes entrance to the lagoon, a silica mud face mask, use of a towel, and one complimentary drink of your choice. Set within a dramatic lava field, the milky blue waters are rich in minerals and geothermal warmth, offering a deeply relaxing experience that soothes the skin and calms the mind.
Overnight in Reykjavík. 1 night accommodation at Fosshotel Lind or similar. Standard double room with private facilities and breakfast included.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
